What are the Gatsby Benchmarks?
The Gatsby Benchmarks are a framework of 8 key guidelines developed to help schools to deliver high-quality careers education. They are as a result of a research project commissioned by The Gatsby Foundation in 2013 to identify the best international practices in careers guidance. The findings, published in the report ‘Good Career Guidance’ in 2014, have since become the cornerstone of careers provision in schools across the UK. The benchmarks were designed to address inconsistencies in careers education and provide schools with a clear, evidence-based framework to ensure all students receive the support they need to make informed decisions about their future.
1) A stable careers programme
Schools should have a structured and well-communicated careers programme for students, parents and staff.
2) Learning from Career and Labour Market Information (LMI)
Students and parents should have access to high-quality Labour Market Information to make informed decisions.
3) Addressing the needs of each pupil
Careers programmes should cater to the diverse needs of all students, promoting equality and inclusivity.
4) Linking curriculum learning to careers
Subjects should highlight their relevance to various career paths.
5) Encounters with Employers and Employees
Students should engage with employers to learn about the world of work.
6) Experiences of Workplaces
Opportunities for work experience should give students a first-hand understanding of the workplace.
7) Encounters with Further and Higher Education
Students should have exposure to a range of post-16 and post-18 options, including colleges, universities and apprenticeships.
8) Personal Guidance
Every student should have access to at least one careers guidance meeting by the age of 16 and another by the age of 18.
The Gatsby Benchmarks ensure that every student has access to consistent, meaningful careers education. By meeting these standards, schools can help students to understand their options, develop key employability skills and feel confident about their future choices.
Our school is proud to use The Gatsby Benchmarks as a foundation for our careers programme, ensuring your child is supported every step of the way.
